Outline
This training teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and to provide initial help and support – like first aiders do for people with physical ill health issues.
Learning takes place across four manageable sessions. Through a mix of group activities, presentations and discussions, each session is built around a mental health first aid action plan. Everyone who completes the course gets a:
- manual to refer to whenever you need it
- workbook including a helpful toolkit to support your own mental health
- certificate of attendance to say you are a mental health first aider
Description
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and provide help on a first aid basis. MHFA won’t teach you to be a therapist, but just like physical first aid, it will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis. The adult MHFA two day course qualifies you as a mental health first aider.
Outcomes
- I have a deeper understanding of mental health conditions and the factors that can affect wellbeing
- I have learned practical skills to help spot the triggers and signs of mental health ill health
- I am building skills and confidence to approach, reassure and support a person in distress
- I have the local resources to sign post someone to services to recover their health, through self-help information, their employer and the NHS.
Audience
Adult MHFA courses are for everyone aged 16 upwards.
