The THINK Child Guide supports professional to help families to have conversations about parental mental health and the impact on children and young people in the family household. It gives a framework in how to have a guided conversations using the acronym THINK child as a tool.  There is a recording of ‘how to use the THINK Child Guide’ in practice to further support guided conversations.

Description

The THINK Child Guide and recording support professional curiosity in having conversations with parents and carers about their mental health and emotional wellbeing. The Guide promotes exploring strengths and needs within the wider family and community support in a holistic way. The recording demonstrates how to have conversations about the impact on children and young people in the family using the THINK Child acronym, practically.

Outcomes

Key messages from the toolkit include:

  • The purpose of the toolkit is not to assess mental health but to understand impact of mental health on children and young people
  • Open conversations stimulate family and professional curiosity with regards to child and young persons lived experiences
  • Open dialogue with other professionals and family and friends around mental health promotes improved understanding and supportive networks
  • Mental health and wellbeing fluctuates and professionals and families need to be adaptable and respond to those changes
